Aviation History @ Warren Library - Commemorative Air Force's FIFI

Saturday, June 1st at 2 pm

The Warren Twp. Library will remember those who have died in our nation’s service with a program about aviation history. The Boeing B-29 is best remembered for being the type of plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. But it is much more than that. It was the most technologically advanced aircraft the United States had ever built up to that point. It could fly farther, faster, and higher than any other bomber in the U.S. arsenal. It had computer-assisted remote control gun turrets and a pressurized cabin. Not only did it help bring World War II to an end, but it served in the Korean War and was an instrument in the Cold War. Out of nearly 4,000 B-29s built, only one is still flying -- the Commemorative Air Force's FIFI.

This illustrated presentation covers the history of the B-29 with historic photos, from its development to its operations during WWII and Korea, as well as the history of FIFI.FIFI will be at the Reading, Pennsylvania WWII Show from Thursday, June 6 - Sunday, June 9. Flights and cockpit tours will be available.

Guest speaker: Steve Schapiro is a crew member on FIFI, the last flying B-29 in the world.  Last year he spent approximately three months on tour with the bomber as the 'embedded journalist' writing about the people that came to see and fly in the aircraft. He is a private pilot and spends his free time flying and writing about aviation. Steve grew up in Warren and currently lives in town.
