Somerville Public Library Temporarily Closing for Renovations

The Somerville Public Library, a branch of the Somerset County Library System (SCLS), is undergoing renovation work.  In order to accommodate the construction schedule, the entire facility will be closed starting June 1.  Renovation work is expected to take all summer, with an expected re-opening date to occur in mid-September.  The library is located at 35 West End Avenue in Somerville, NJ.

The work will create a teen area in the loft, where the majority of adult fiction is currently housed.  In addition, an enclosed meeting space will be created in what is now the main reading area of the library.  A refurbished and relocated circulation desk, along with new book cases, new computer wiring upgrades, and lighting enhancements are a part of the planned work.  Bathroom renovations and a new handicapped accessible ramp will complete the construction work.

“We are delighted to be able to refurbish and upgrade the library with the majority of the funds coming from bequests and prior savings,” notes Herbert Hall, president of the Board of Trustees of the Somerville Public Library.  The $700,000 project includes monies that the Board of Trustees of the Somerville Public Library has privately raised.

Aviation History @ Warren Library - Commemorative Air Force's FIFI

Saturday, June 1st at 2 pm

The Warren Twp. Library will remember those who have died in our nation’s service with a program about aviation history. The Boeing B-29 is best remembered for being the type of plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. But it is much more than that. It was the most technologically advanced aircraft the United States had ever built up to that point. It could fly farther, faster, and higher than any other bomber in the U.S. arsenal. It had computer-assisted remote control gun turrets and a pressurized cabin. Not only did it help bring World War II to an end, but it served in the Korean War and was an instrument in the Cold War. Out of nearly 4,000 B-29s built, only one is still flying -- the Commemorative Air Force's FIFI.

This illustrated presentation covers the history of the B-29 with historic photos, from its development to its operations during WWII and Korea, as well as the history of FIFI.FIFI will be at the Reading, Pennsylvania WWII Show from Thursday, June 6 - Sunday, June 9. Flights and cockpit tours will be available.

Guest speaker: Steve Schapiro is a crew member on FIFI, the last flying B-29 in the world.  Last year he spent approximately three months on tour with the bomber as the 'embedded journalist' writing about the people that came to see and fly in the aircraft. He is a private pilot and spends his free time flying and writing about aviation. Steve grew up in Warren and currently lives in town.

Pre-registration is required to attend this program, as seating is limited. 'My Somerset County' Scrapbook/Digital History Project

‘My Somerset County’ Scrapbook & Digital History Project Celebrate County’s 325th Anniversary

BRIDGEWATER - Somerset County officials today (May 22) unveiled a special online historical project as part of the county’s 325th anniversary celebration. The date for the unveiling was chosen to commemorate Somerset County’s founding on May 22, 1688.

The Board of Freeholders and the Somerset County Library System are collaborating to offer a “My Somerset County” online scrapbook that will help populate a digital history project planned by the library system.

“We invite residents and nonresidents to share memorable experiences of Somerset County landmarks, historic sites, recreation facilities, festivals and more via photographs and comments,” said Freeholder Director Peter S. Palmer.  “These cultural artifacts will provide a glimpse into the past and in some cases will provide personal recollections about historic sites or events.

“This scrapbook will be an enduring endeavor that will act as an ‘insider’s look’ into our county’s many treasures,” he said. “We hope that it will span many decades to come and will add to our understanding of our heritage and identity.”

“The Somerset County Library System has created a place on the Web where anyone can share images of people and places that have made this county so rich in history, and the wonderful place it is today,” said Somerset County Library System Director Brian Auger.

“In its early stages, the website will be a fairly simple scrapbook.  As it develops, the Library will provide more features.  The Library is planning to enhance the site with oral histories, stories and recollections by and about people - present and past - whose contributions have made the county what it is.

“The public is invited to visit www.mysomersetcounty.org often to learn about the many treasures of Somerset County as they are posted to the online scrapbook and digital histories.  The library envisions this resource to be a rich repository of images and stories about New Jersey’s best place to live,” he said.

To be a part of the “My Somerset County” scrapbook /digital history project, you can submit a photo and comment directly by going to http://www.mysomersetcounty.org, selecting “Submit Photos” and completing the form. Comments should be 500 words or less and should relate to the photo submitted.  Or you can mail your photos to My Somerset County, Attn: Richard Loomis, Somerset County/ Bridgewater Library, 1 Vogt Drive, P.O. Box 6700, Bridgewater, N.J. 08807, drop them off at any of the county’s 10 libraries or make an appointment to have the photos scanned in person at the library.  Photos will be returned via U.S. mail. It is preferred that mailed comments be written in print, rather than cursive, for easy reading.

For more information about the “My Somerset County” scrapbook / digital history project, contact Richard Loomis at rloomis@sclibnj.org or 908-526-4016 ext. 171.

In addition to this project, as part of the county’s 325th anniversary celebration, the Freeholders and county Cultural & Heritage Commission are hosting a special art gallery collection at the county administration building through May 24 and a concert is planned on the courthouse green, featuring the Whitehouse Wind Symphony, on June 2 at 2 p.m. Also, the freeholders unveiled a collage featuring historic photos from the 21 municipalities in the lobby of the Bridgewater Library.

The Somerset County Park Commission has dedicated several events to the anniversary celebration, including National Trails Day on June 1, Independence Day Family Festival on July 4 and the 1770 Festival on Oct. 6.  Visit www.somersetcountyparks.org for more information about these events.

The next meeting of the Warren Business Professional Networking Community (WBPNC) will take place on Monday, May 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

As part of this networking series, the Warren Twp Library has invited Vicki Lynne Morgan from the Small Business Development Center at Raritan Valley Community College to speak to small business owners and business professionals from the Warren-Watchung area. Ms. Morgan is the President of the Russmor Marketing Group. She will explore the five critical foundations that are easily applied to any business model including manufacturing, wholesale, retail and service-related industries. Entrepreneurs and business owners will discover that their personalized ‘road map’, based on the five foundations, will enable them to move forward to achieve their goals. Keeping with the format of previous networking events at the Warren Library, there will be an opportunity to network with other attendees before and after the presentation as well as a question and answer session. Light food and refreshments will be served.

Pre-registration is required to attend this event.  Please call the Reference Desk at 908-754-5554 ext 32 to register for this program.  Please join the Warren Business Professional Networking Community in LinkedIn.

Car Show at the Library

The 9th Annual Car Show will take place at the Bridgewater Public Library on Saturday, May 11th from 12 noon – 3 pm.  The library is located at 1 Vogt Drive, Bridgewater, NJ.  Approximately 75 vintage cars will be on view in the library’s parking lot, as visitors vote on criteria such as Best in Show, Dream Car, Best Paint Job, among other categories.

“We started the Show as a way to illustrate the beauty and history of vintage vehicles for local car buffs.  Plus, the library is where someone interested in antique automobiles can find plenty of information to learn more, making this the perfect place to host the show,” noted Rich Loomis, the car show coordinator and electronics resources librarian for Somerset County Library System (SCLS).

The rain date for the Car Show is Saturday, May 25.

Somerville Public Library to Undergo Renovations

The Somerville Public Library, a branch of the Somerset County Library System (SCLS), will shortly be undergoing renovation work.  In order to accommodate the construction schedule, the adult services section will close on May 10.  Renovation work is expected to take all summer, with an expected re-opening date to occur in mid-September. The Somerville Public Library is located at 35 West End Avenue.

The work will create a teen area in the loft, where the majority of adult fiction is currently housed.  In addition, an enclosed meeting space will be created in what is now the main reading area of the library.  A refurbished and relocated circulation desk, along with new book cases, new computer wiring upgrades, and lighting enhancements are also a part of the planned work.

“We are delighted to be able to refurbish and upgrade the library with the majority of the funds coming from bequests and prior savings,” notes Herbert Hall, president of the Board of Trustees of the Somerville Public Library.  The $700,000 project includes monies that the Board of Trustees of the Somerville Public Library have privately raised.
