Next 'BOBO Fridays' Food Collection - Nov. 15

Donate to 'BOBO Fridays' Food Drive - Nov. 15
Food Bank Demand Increases During Holiday Season

The next "Buy One, Bring One" (BOBO) collection of food for Somerset County families in need will be held Friday, Nov. 15.

"With the holiday season approaching, the demand at the Food Bank Network of Somerset County is greater than ever," said Freeholder Patricia Walsh, who spearheaded the BOBO Fridays program.  "Employees and visitors to various county, municipal and library locations can help by dropping off non-perishables in any of the blue BOBO Fridays bins."

Canned or boxed food items are accepted.  For ideas about healthy foods to donate, go to http://bit.ly/FoodPantryDonations.

Look for the blue BOBO Fridays bins at these county locations: Somerset County Administration Building, 20 Grove St., Somerville; Park Commission Headquarters, 355 Milltown Road, Bridgewater; Lord Stirling Stable, 256 S. Maple Ave., Basking Ridge; and Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge.

Local libraries hosting the bins include the Bernardsville Library, Bound Brook Memorial Library, Bridgewater Library, Manville Library, Mary Jacobs Memorial Library (Rocky Hill), North Plainfield Library, Peapack-Gladstone Library, Somerville Public Library, Warren Township Library and Watchung Library.

Towns that have BOBO Fridays bins in their municipal buildings are Bedminster, Bound Brook, Franklin, Green Brook, North Plainfield and Raritan.

Although the targeted collection schedule is the third Friday of every month, the bins are available every day, so donations may be dropped off at any time during regular business hours at all locations.

The Board of Freeholders also is promoting the fourth annual Adopt-A-Family program, which allows donors to provide a Thanksgiving meal for a family in the town of their choice. For information and to print the donation form, go to http://bit.ly/AdoptAFamily2013.

Warren Library temporary closing as of November 11

Beginning Monday, November 11, the Warren Township Library (a branch of the Somerset County Library System), located at 42 Mountain Boulevard in Warren, New Jersey, will close for approximately four weeks for needed painting and renovations, including the women’s public restroom.

“You know how disruptive it is to paint your house,” commented System Director Brian Auger, “this is much worse as all the wall-mounted shelving and the books on them, have to come down first. We are very sorry for the inconvenience, but could not find any other way to get the work done quickly and safely.”

As a result of the areas being renovated and painted, and the fact that there will be no staff in the building, the book drop will be closed.  Materials can be returned to any SCLS branch; the closest branches are Watchung, North Plainfield, Bound Brook and Bridgewater.  Staff has been advising patrons to change the pick-up location for their holds to a nearby branch or to “freeze” them until December 7.

The following programs will take place at the Warren Court Room, next to the Library:

  • Saturday, November 16 @ 2 pm. “Meeting Eleanor Roosevelt” portrayed by actress Linda Kenyon.
  • Monday, November 18 @ 6:30 pm. Parent/Teacher Program—Let the Brain Games Begin! Toys and Games to Boost your Brain Power.
  • Wednesday, November 20 @ 7 pm. Identity Theft, presented by Kevin Lynch, from the Society of Financial Awareness.
  • Saturday, November 23 @ 2 pm. The Music of the British Invasion, performed by the group “Carnaby Street!” led by Chris Roselle.
  • Wednesday, December 4 @ 7 PM– Teen Program –Finding Truth in YA Fiction—A Panel of YA Authors.

Pilgrims and Gangsters at Warren Library this week

On Thursday, November 7 at 7 pm, actor David Emerson will portray Stephen Hopkins from the Mayflower. Hopkins was no Saint (as the separatist founders of Plimoth Colony referred to their congregation, the Church of Saints), but his previous experience in the New World made him a useful and respected member of the group of New England settlers popularly known as “the Pilgrims.” Find out about the politics, religion, economics, Native American relations, and social life of the first permanent settlement in New England from his unique perspective. To register online please click on this link http://bit.ly/1apoRi3.

On Saturday, November 9 at 2 pm, master storyteller Marc Mappen applies a generational perspective to the gangsters of the Prohibition era, who came to power with the Eighteenth Amendment.  Today the names of these young men - Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Nucky Johnson- are more familiar than ever, thanks in part to movie and cable TV programs such as Boardwalk Empire. Making use of FBI and other government files, trials transcripts, etc. Mappen's book provides a lively narrative of shootouts, car chases, courtroom clashes and rub-outs in the roaring 1920s, the Depression of the 1930s and beyond. 'Prohibition Gangsters' was featured in the New York Times.  To read about it click on this link http://nyti.ms/15VqDbZ.

Marc Mappen is the Executive Director of the New Jersey Historical Commission, a professor at Rutgers University and the author of a number of books and articles about NJ.  To register for this program online please click on this link http://bit.ly/186a7on.
