Somerset County Spell-Off at SCLS
The Somerset County Library System (SCLS) hosted the annual Somerset County Spell-Off for children in grades 4 – 8, Friday, March 15 at the Bridgewater Library.
“This is an exciting opportunity to showcase the academic strengths of Somerset County middle grade students,” noted Rebecca Crawford Youth Services Department Head.
A total of 18 students from six schools sent students to the Spell-Off including:
• Branchburg Central Middle School
• Far Hills County Day School
• Montgomery Lower Middle School
• Montgomery Upper Middle School
• School of St. Elizabeth (Bernardsville)
• Stony Brook Elementary School (Branchburg)
Seventh grader speller Srividhi Ramakrishna, Montgomery Upper Middle School finished first after going 14 rounds head-to-head with Meghan Moran, Branchburg Central Middle who finished second. All the students were excited, well-behaved and good sports. They were awarded certificates and the winner received a dictionary to encourage her love of words.

Social Media and Email Marketing Breakfast Seminar at SCLS
The Somerset County Library System (SCLS) will be hosting a Business Breakfast Seminar on social media and email marketing at the Bridgewater Library, on Tuesday, April 2, from 8 am – 10 am. The library is located at 1 Vogt Drive, Bridgewater, NJ.
A part of the Grow NJ Business Strong program presented by the New Jersey State Library, the seminar will be given by a marketing and email expert from Constant Contact, a leader in on-line marketing.
“Businesses are still facing on-going challenges from the recent recession. Showcasing tools and resources that are available to business people through the library that will help them to grow business with no direct cost is clearly a winning combination,” noted SCLS director Brian Auger.
Representatives from various business-related organizations will also be on hand to answer questions and provide information immediately following the session. The New Jersey Small Business Development Center, The Women’s Business Center, SCORE, the US Small Business Administration, New Jersey Business Action Center, Connecting NJ and ReferenceUSA will all be available for informal discussions.

Columnist Mark Di Ionno and Pulitzer Prize winner Amy Ellis Nutt covered Superstorm Sandy for The Star-Ledger from the very beginning and are following its aftermath and reconstruction efforts, especially in the Jersey Shore area. Find out about their experiences covering this devastating event in NJ history. Why was this storm a weather event unlike anything that had happened in past history? Learn about the people they met along the way, how the Shore residents came together as a community and the assistance they received from unlikely sources, such as the Amish.
Amy Ellis Nutt has been a staff writer at The Star-Ledger since 1997. She was awarded the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing, for the story, ‘The Wreck of the Lady Mary,’ the mysterious sinking of a fishing boat off the coast of New Jersey in 2009. Amy is also an adjunct professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
Mark Di Ionno is a lifetime newspaperman and a four-time winner of the New Jersey Press Association’s first-place award for column writing for The Star-Ledger. Besides his work as columnist and author, Mark is also an adjunct professor of journalism at his alma-mater Rutgers Newark. Di Ionno is the author of three award-winning nonfiction books about New Jersey. His first novel The Last Newspaperman, released in September of 2012, was a finalist in the 2012 USA Best Book Awards in the General Fiction category.

These ongoing classes will offer general information about the GED and will provide information, practice, and instruction for four parts of the GED test: essay, social studies, science and reading. Test-taking tips, procedures, and sample passages will be part of each class. Essay instruction will cover sentence structure, organization, usage and mechanics. A scoring guide and essay samples will be reviewed.
