Diet, Exercise and Self-help are the focus of upcoming programs for adults at the Warren Library

The Warren Township Library has planned a series of programs that will address different aspects of health and self-improvement. These upcoming programs will deal with popular topics such as weight loss, self-help and psychology.

On Saturday, September 28 at 2 pm fitness expert Joe Stein will give another entertaining talk based on his newly released book “Leave the Cannoli, Take the Weights!”  With humor, empathy and his no-nonsense approach to healthy eating and exercise, Joe will inspire the audience to get on the right track to a healthy lifestyle.  Learn about changes in our metabolism as we age, and how to modify our exercise routine as we move through the various stages of our life.  There will also be a drawing for a chance to win a signed copy of his new book.

“Creating a Shift in your Life” is the title of the workshop to be presented by Warren resident, life coach Andrea Silvershein at 7 pm on Tuesday, October 1st.   She will show how it feels to gain clarity and a vision of what your life can be… no matter what stage you are in. Andrea will explore ways to help you focus and move forward, create “ah-ha” moments, and break through perceived barriers sending doubts tumbling down.

Another self-help program, “The Secrets to Saying NO! Setting Healthy Boundaries”, on Thursday, October 3 at 7 pm will be presented by counselor and certified Life Coach Laurie Leinwand. This talk will help you uncover your priorities and learn how to say NO effectively.  You will leave this workshop with an anchor phrase that will increase your confidence.  An engaging speaker, Laurie Leinwand, presents thought-provoking material and useful strategies that participants can begin implementing right away.

Between Halloween candy and the upcoming holidays, this time of the year is particularly difficult if you suffer from the “Sugar Blues”.  Are you constantly craving sweets and want to understand why? On Tuesday, October 8 at 7 pm, learn how to gain control without deprivation during this lecture by Dana Biggs, holistic health coach.

Providing More at SCLS

The Somerset County Library System (SCLS) is on a mission to put more information resources into the hands of its patrons with no additional cost to taxpayers.  Two initiatives will advance that goal.

The first change is in how long items may be borrowed.  To get more books into additional patrons’ hands quickly, the “standard” loan will be reduced from four weeks to three weeks, beginning October 1.  While shorter by a week, as long as no one else has placed a hold on the title, customers may now renew items three times instead of twice.  On popular items with more than four holds, the lending period will continue to be two weeks with no renewals.

Additionally, in order to have more copies on hand of in-demand adult fiction at any given time, SCLS will begin leasing copies of popular titles.  This provides for more copies without having to buy books which would later become “surplus.”

“We’re always looking for ways to provide better services at lower costs,” noted Brian Auger, Somerset County Library System Director.  “Making small changes to loan periods and leasing popular materials are two easy ways to do that.”

Patrons with further questions can call SCLS at (908)526-4016 or visit the website at http://www.sclsnj.org.  The Somerset County Library System has branches in Bridgewater, Bound Brook, Hillsborough, Manville, at the Mary Jacobs Library in Rocky Hill, North Plainfield, Peapack & Gladstone, Somerville, Warren Township and Watchung.

Donate to ‘BOBO Friday’ Food Drive - Sept. 20

The next “Buy One, Bring One” (BOBO) collection of food for Somerset County families in need will be held Friday, Sept. 20.

“The slow economic recovery has put a severe dent in local food-bank supplies and raised demand significantly,” said Freeholder Patricia Walsh, who spearheaded the BOBO Fridays program.  “Employees and visitors to various county, municipal and library locations can help by dropping off non-perishables in any of the blue BOBO Fridays bins.”

Canned or boxed food items are accepted.  For ideas about healthy foods to donate, go to http://bit.ly/FoodPantryDonations.

Look for the blue BOBO Fridays bins at these county locations: Somerset County Administration Building, 20 Grove St., Somerville; Park Commission Headquarters, 355 Milltown Road, Bridgewater; Lord Stirling Stable, 256 S. Maple Ave., Basking Ridge; and Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge.

Local libraries hosting the bins include the Bernardsville Library, Bound Brook Memorial Library, Bridgewater Library, Manville Library, Mary Jacobs Memorial Library (Rocky Hill), North Plainfield Library, Peapack-Gladstone Library, Somerville Public Library, Warren Township Library and Watchung Library.

Towns that have BOBO Fridays bins in their municipal buildings are Bedminster, Bound Brook, Franklin, Green Brook, North Plainfield and Raritan.

Although the targeted collection schedule is the third Friday of every month, the bins are available every day, so donations may be dropped off at any time during regular business hours at all locations.
