Celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day by attending this amazing program!

The Raritan Economic Development Committee, in conjunction with the Rutgers E.J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy and the Sustainable Raritan River Collaborative, will present the film "Reimagining Our Watershed: A Renaissance on the Raritan". This film features projects and organizations from all areas of the Raritan, South Branch, the Upper Raritan and the Lower Raritan, and many tributaries too! Dr. Judy Shaw, Director of the Raritan River Inititiative, will provide comments. We will also share the story of one very special project - the restoration of fish runs through the removal of two obsolete dams on the river. John Jengo, Principal Hydrologist with MWH Global, will give remarks. Light refreshments will be served.

Decorative Arts & Classical Music this week @ Warren Library

Decorative Arts @ Newark Museum: 7 PM, Thursday, April 25. The Museum’s Decorative Arts collection comprises a vast array of household objects from the United States and Europe. This illustrated presentation highlights objects of applied art ranging from the sixteenth century to the present day and includes superb examples of furniture, silver, ceramic, glass, jewelry and textiles. The centerpiece of this collection is the Ballantine House – a 19^th century National Historic landmark, former home to the celebrated Newark beer brewing family. Passes for free admission to the Newark Museum will be handed out at the conclusion of the program.

Musical Saturday @ Warren Library: Madison String Quartet interprets “From Beethoven to Buenos Aires”: 2 PM, Saturday, April 27.  The Madison String Quartet will perform a concert entitled “From Beethoven to Buenos Aires”, as they interpret pieces from an eclectic repertoire which includes Ludwig van Beethoven and Latin American composers of contemporary classical music.  This concert is geared toward adults only.

SCLS is helping give out half a million free books across America on April 23rd

 On April 23, 2013, 25,000 volunteers from Berkeley to Bridgewater, NJ and Sitka to Sarasota will give away half a million free books in more than 6,000 towns and cities across the country.  World Book Night U.S. is an ambitious campaign to give thousands of free, specially printed paperbacks to light or nonreaders across America on one day.  Volunteer book lovers help promote reading by going out into their communities and sharing free copies of books they love. The mission of World Book Night is to seek out those without the means or access to printed books.

Some of the volunteers in our community will be picking up their books at the Bridgewater Library in Bridgewater, NJ and sharing them in locations as diverse as VA hospitals, roller skating rinks, mass transit, nursing homes, schools, food pantries, and more.  Somerset County Library System (SCLS) is proud to be a partner in World Book Night U.S. for a second year.

Bestselling authors Ann Patchett and James Patterson are this year’s honorary chair-people. James Patterson said: “In my experience, when people like what they are doing, they do more of it. This is the genius of World Book Night — it gets people reading by connecting them with amazing, enjoyable books. I’m honored to be a part of it.”

“I’m very proud to be a part of World Book Night,” Ann Patchett added.  “As both a writer and a bookseller, I’m all in favor of getting books into the hands of people who might not otherwise have access to them.”

The books were chosen by an independent panel of booksellers and librarians through several rounds of voting. The printing of the free books was possible due to generosity of the authors, publishers, and book manufacturing companies.

Those interested in participating in the future can sign up for the WBN mailing list for news and updates on World Book Night 2014. The free WBN editions are not available at SCLS at any time, except for the WBN volunteers to take into the community, but we will be displaying the books in their regular editions all spring.

GED Tutoring

Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  

These ongoing classes will offer general information about the GED and will provide information, practice, and instruction for four parts of the GED test: essay, social studies, science and reading.  Test-taking tips, procedures, and sample passages will be part of each class.  

 

Essay instruction will cover sentence structure, organization, usage and mechanics. A scoring guide and essay samples will be reviewed.

Noriko, a native of Japan, graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae, Tokyo. She served as a senior faculty member at the New School for Music Study and taught at the Westminster Conservatory of Music and her home studio in Princeton. Schneiderman currently teaches piano at The Lawrenceville School and has performed nationally and internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist in Austria, France, Japan and the United States. This concert is free and registration is not required.

The Friends of the Bridgewater Library proudly present Caryn Lin's "Bach to Rock," on Saturday, April 6th at 11 am at the Bridgewater Library, for a journey into the simplicity of the solo acoustic violin, its origins, and beyond.

Whisked into present day, Caryn uses the five string electric violin and sound effects to transcend that 'solo' sound by doing what is called 'looping,' creating sound loops live that she adds to and embellishes, creating three-dimensional sound magic that is performed right before your eyes!

Audiences of ALL ages are captivated, and are always encouraged to participate on stage!
